As a photographer, every session is special, but every once in a while, you get the chance to work with someone whose energy and story make the experience truly unforgettable. That’s exactly how I felt when I had the opportunity to photograph Kynlea, the daughter of the battalion chief at Waco Fire Station #1. This spring session was filled with excitement, unexpected twists, and a thrilling adventure that I’ll never forget.

It all started when Kynlea’s mom reached out to me earlier this year with an incredible idea. She asked if we could do her spring photo session on the fire trucks at the station in Waco. Of course, I was beyond excited and immediately said yes. We set the date for April 1st and couldn’t wait to get started. When the big day arrived, it turned out to be a very windy one, with gusts reaching up to 30 miles per hour. But that didn’t stop us! We decided to make the most of the situation and shoot inside the garage, surrounded by the impressive fire engine and fire truck. And, as I quickly learned, they’re actually two very different things...who knew!

We kicked things off with some fun shots of Kynlea wearing her dad’s firefighter gear and helmet, paired with her letterman jacket. It was such a blast to get creative with the gear and capture those special moments. But little did I know, the real adventure was just beginning. As we were transitioning from one fire vehicle to another, Kynlea’s dad, the battalion chief, casually asked, "Do you want to go up in the bucket?" I looked at Kynlea, and neither of us had any idea what he was talking about. He pointed to the ladder, which led up to the bucket atop the fire engine, and we both immediately agreed in excitement.

Now, let me be honest: I have a serious fear of heights. But when you’re standing in front of a fire truck with a view of Waco in the distance, you know you can’t pass up the chance for the perfect shot. So, we made our way into the bucket, strapped ourselves in, and slowly ascended 98 feet into the air. The wind was howling, and I’ll admit, my heart was pounding. But this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I wasn’t going to let my fear stop me from capturing something incredible. As we reached the top, the battalion chief asked if I wanted him to rotate the bucket for a better view. My heart said “no,” but my camera said “yes.” Anything for the perfect shot, right?

We got some truly breathtaking shots with downtown Waco in the background, the wind whipping around us, and Kynlea looking as confident and beautiful as ever. It was an experience I will never forget — and I’m so glad I didn’t let my fear keep me from taking that leap (literally!). Once we made it safely back down to solid ground, we moved on to our next set of shots. Kynlea changed into a cheetah print shirt that popped perfectly against the fire truck's bright red color, and we continued to capture more amazing moments. Every minute of the session was an absolute blast.

The drive to Waco and back — about an hour and a half each way — was so worth it. Kynlea, you are one of a kind. Your smile lights up any room, and getting to know you this year has been such an honor. I can’t wait to see all the incredible things you’ll do at Texas State next year, and I hope our paths cross again someday for another photo session. Your charm, humor, and infectious personality have made my year, and I will miss that sweet spirit you bring to everything you do.

Thank you for letting me be a part of such a special time in your life. I’m so proud of you and can’t wait to see all the greatness you achieve in the future.
